Hybrid WANs employ a combination of private and public network services. The service itself may operate over a dedicated, private connection - often backed by a service-level agreement - or over a shared, public medium, like the internet. WAN infrastructure may be privately owned or leased as a service from a third-party service provider, such as a telecommunications carrier, internet service provider, private IP network operator or cable company. WANs over wired network connections remain in place for many enterprises, but WWAN technologies are gaining traction. ![]() Wireless WAN (WWAN) technologies can include cellular data networks, like 5G, as well as public Wi-Fi or satellite networks. Wired WAN services can consist of the following: WAN connections can include wired and wireless technologies. ![]() A LAN can be set up in different geographical areas and be connected to a WAN, meaning a WAN is not constrained to one specific location. WANs are not restricted to the same geographical location as a LAN. This connectivity eliminates the need to install the same application server, firewall or other resources in multiple locations. Typically, a router or other multifunction device is used to connect a LAN to a WAN.Įnterprise WANs enable users to access applications, services and other centrally located resources. In a business, a WAN includes connections to a company's headquarters, branch offices, colocation facilities, cloud services and other facilities. A LAN is a group of computers and network devices that are connected to each other, typically within a short relative geographical distance. The five-year 100 million dollar, NUSAF program was implemented in 2003 to assist government tackle poverty and bring about development that utilizes and builds on community value systems in the North and North-eastern Uganda.A wide area network (WAN) is a geographically distributed private telecommunications network that interconnects multiple local area networks ( LANs). They also asked for the approval and disbursement of funds, for hundreds of sub-projects still lying idle at the NUSAF headquarters in Gulu. Arua leaders called for a review of the procurement system, following complaints that local businessmen are fleecing communities of sub-project funds. Arua Chief Administrative Officer, Vitalis Oswan, said the district plans to integrate NUSAF in its planning processes. The World Bank team recommended that best practices in NUSAF, be translated into mainstream government programs to promote sustainability, functionality and its potential to compliment poverty alleviation efforts. The World Bank team was also impressed with the involvement of women in the sub-projects, but urged for more focus on girl-child education. Hicks said NUSAF is one of the best social funds ever funded by the World Bank because it has had tremendous community demand and involvement. Speaking to Arua district leaders, Norman Hicks, from the World Bank headquarters in Washington DC, said he was happy that several communities in Koboko and Arua districts have already benefited from the project. The team visited nine select sub-projects in the districts. The team, led by Akim Okuni, has been on a NUSAF implementation support mission in Arua and Koboko districts. A World Bank team says it is impressed with the performance of the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) program in Arua District.
